Through your support, the Igloo Tag Trademark is being expanded so everyone who appreciates or is involved with Inuit art can benefit.

Two consultation sessions were held at the Northern Lights Business & Cultural Showcase in Ottawa in January 2018 with artists, gallery owners, collectors and wholesalers.

Every artist expressed a desire for the program to grow. Some suggested taking the trademark to new media, such as clothing and film. Others suggested that Inuit artists should all be able to access the Igloo Tag, regardless of where they live. A critical question that remains is how artists can best access the tags.

These direct discussions with artists and galleries are critical to ensuring the program serves today’s Inuit art world and guarantees authenticity, which benefits both artists and collectors. Your support makes reaching out and gaining a variety of perspectives possible. Thank you!

So far this year, your support has allowed the Foundation to:

  • Draft a licensing agreement for gallery owners;
  • Hold consultations at the Northern Lights conference;
  • Release three different individual Igloo Tag surveys, tailored for artists, distributors and collectors.

Thank you for helping develop a path for an Igloo Tag re-launch. This will be an incredible legacy for Inuit art, and will continue to benefit artists forever.

The goal is to re-launch the Igloo Tag program in 2020. In 2018, consultations will continue in order to determine what should change with the program and what aspects should remain. We would love to hear your thoughts, so please connect with Alysa any time at 647-498-7717, extension 101, if you have feedback you would like to share.

Coupling in-person sessions with long-distance digital consultations is the most cost-effective approach to finding consensus from coast to coast to coast. The IAF plans to visit each region of Inuit Nunangat where and when we can access the broadest feedback. You’ll therefore see us at these popular upcoming events:

  • The Nunavut Arts Festival in Iqaluit, NU (July 2018)
  • The Great Northern Arts Festival in Inuvik, NWT (July 2018)
  • Aqpik Jam 2018 in Kuujjuaq, QC (August 2018)
  • The Nunavik Art Workshops in Kuujjuaq, QC (September 2018)
  • The Illusuak Cultural Centre Grand Opening (Nain, NL) (Fall 2018)

Thank you again—2018 will be a year of enormous development for the trademark.
