The Inuit Art Quarterly, the world’s only magazine focused on Inuit and circumpolar Indigenous arts, has received two 2020 National Magazine Award nominations.

This year, the IAQ has been shortlisted in the category of Best Magazine: Art, Literary and Culture, and Best Short Feature Writing for “Remembering Our Ways: Film and Culture in Iglulik” by Blandina Attaarjuaq Makkik.

The IAQ is nominated alongside Prefix Photo, a biannual publication on photography, and The Site Magazine, a journal of contemporary architecture, landscape, urbanism, and design in Canada. The 2019 publishing calendar of the IAQ included issues on storytelling, film, prints and sculptural practices as well as a special all-Inuit authored issue on the occasion of the Isuma Collective’s participation at the Venice Biennale. This marks the second nomination for the IAQ in the category of Best Magazine: Art, Literary and Culture at the NMA’s, the first being in 2018

Makkik, whose piece was included in the IAQ’s Summer 2019 issue Film: Moving Images, is a producer, translator and Igloo Tag Coordinator for the Inuit Art Foundation and was formerly the Senior Producer for the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation where she developed the award-winning show Takuginai, the first Inuktitut language children’s program. Makkik’s intimate, first-person essay traces the evolution of the filmmaking scene of her home community, Iglulik, NU, now known worldwide as the home base for Isuma and Arnait productions.

The IAQ team would like to extend our sincere thanks and congratulations to all the writers and artists who contributed to our 2019 editorial calendar, for sharing their enthusiasm, passion and creativity in our pages.

Award winners will be announced in June.
