Biography

Becky Michelin is a painter originally from Rigolet, Nunatsiavut, NL, who currently lives in Happy Valley Goose Bay, NL. Mostly self-taught, she started oil painting on canvas in 2025. For Michelin, painting is a form of therapy and healing. “It’s something I really enjoy doing…it kind of just lets you let go of everything at the end of the day,” [1] she says. Michelin also creates bookmarks, key chains, and Christmas ornaments.

The northern lights are one of the biggest sources of inspiration for Michelin and are often featured in her work. “The northern lights always reminded me of my mom, and my mom passed away when I was little,” she says. Her paintings often feature vibrant shades of purple, blue, teal, and green that are seamlessly blended to depict the shifting light. She has also been experimenting with black-and-white paintings, like in Shades of Survival (2026). The sharp tips of the mountains contrast against the fluid calmness of the water, representing Michelin’s experiences with hardship and peace. “Even without colour, there is still beauty, still strength, and still quiet healing,” she says.

Michelin’s interest in photography began when she was a child. “I remember when I bought my first camera with my own money. I was so proud,” she says. In 2012, she took online photography courses and opened a business, working out of a small studio. She took a break from making art in 2015 when she started a nursing program and picked it back up in summer 2025.

In 2026, Michelin is working on creating an online shop where she can sell her work. She also hopes to create calendars and greeting cards. She has participated in some craft fairs in Happy Valley Goose Bay and hopes to continue to do so.
