Biography

Davie Atchealak was an Inuk artist who lived and worked in Pangnirtung and Iqaluit. Primarily a sculptor, he made headlines in May 1989 when his whalebone work Drum Dancer sold at an auction for a record-breaking $45,000. Atchealak’s works are often described as being done in a mode of realism inflected by a sense of heroic masculinity—a style exemplified by his large carvings of bears and humans.View Long Biography and Citations
