Biography

Neevie Simigak is an artist from Kangirsuk, Nunavik, QC, currently based in Montreal, QC. Simigak works with beads and sealskin to create jewellery through her business Inutsuapik and additionally creates prints and drawings

Although she learned to bead at a young age in school, it wasn’t until the summer of 2019 that SImigak began a more dedicated practice. She has since proven to be a prolific crafter and designer with a growing following in the digital marketplace following her social media channels for new designs. Among her favourite pieces to create include moon-shaped sealskin earrings and hoop earrings with tiny uluit dangling inside. She also makes seal-shaped sealskin earrings, a clever play on the material.

“I don’t consider myself an expert, for now it’s just something I enjoy,” she says, “I don't want to be perfect in my work, I just really want to enjoy it and share my art with everyone." [1]

Looking towards the future, Simigak has plans to expand her artistic practice in order to advocate for Inuit through storytelling and raising awareness on the history of colonization. She graduated from the Arts and Culture program at Dawson College in Montreal, QC, in 2020, and in 2022 began studying Liberal Arts at Concordia University.
