Biography

Shuvinai Ashoona is a graphic artist based in Kinngait (Cape Dorset), NU. She first began drawing in the early 1990s, when her younger sister encouraged her to go to the Kinngait studios. Ashoona first came to prominence in the late 1990s, when her work was included in the Cape Dorset Annual Print Collection of 1997. A couple of years later, alongside her grandmother, Pitseolak Ashoona and her aunt, Napachie Pootoogook, Shuvinai Ashoona was included in “Three Women, Three Generations” presented at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection (1999), curated by Jean Blodgett. Ashoona’s work is exhibited nationally and internationally, and has been included in major exhibitions such as the “18th Biennale of Sydney: All Our Relations” (2012), and “Oh, Canada” (2012) at Mass MoCA (where Ashoona was exhibited alongside her cousin, Annie Pootoogook).View Long Biography and Citations
