Biography
Andrea Flowers is a craftswoman from Hopedale, Nunatsiavut, and one of the few artists who knows how to make the labour-intensive black-bottom sealskin boots from start to finish. For decades she has made these beautiful and waterproof boots out of seals caught by her husband and sons. In addition to working with seal and hide, Flowers likes to sew, crochet and knit. She learned knitting as a young woman and watched her mother sew growing up, but it wasn’t until Flowers moved to Hopedale in 1952 that she really developed her skills as a seamstress. She also does minimal beadwork on the mitts, slippers and boots she makes, sometimes collaborating with another local artist, Sarah Jensen, who is well known for her slippers and beautiful beadwork, or with her talented granddaughters.
