Katherine Takpannie is among thirteen photographers longlisted for the New Generation Photography Award, which celebrates three young Canadians working in lens-based art each year.

Takpannie is an artist and writer currently based in Ottawa, ON. A graduate of the Nunavut Sivuniksavut program, her photographs capture performative and political gestures set against natural and built environments, as well as intimate portraits of women. Using her images to index the complexity of moving through the world, she centres the nuances of urban Inuit life in her practice.  Takpannie was included in the 2018 exhibition Getting Under Our Skin at the Art Gallery of Guelph and her work was profiled in the Spring 2019 issue of the Inuit Art Quarterly.

Established in 2017 as a creative partnership between Scotiabank and the Canadian Photography Institute at the National Gallery of Canada, the New Generation Photography Award is the only dedicated prize offered to photographers age 30 and under. Winners receive a cash prize of $10,000 each and will be featured in group exhibitions at the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival from May-June 2020 and at the National Gallery of Canada from November to March 2020. They will also participate in educational programming and present artist talks at the NGC in November 2020.

This year, jury members include Ann Thomas and Andrea Kunard, Chief and Associate Curators at the National Gallery of Canada respectively, past winner Luther Konadu, artist Suzy Lake, and Université de Québec à Montréal professor Alain Paiement. Winners will be announced March 25, 2020.
