Annie Pootoogook was a celebrated graphic artist from Kinngait (Cape Dorset), NU known for her unflinching look at contemporary life in the North. Growing up under the artistic influence of her mother, Napachie Pootoogook (1938-2002), and her grandmother, Pitseolak Ashoona, CM, RCA (c. 1904-1983), Pootoogook first began working in 1997. And, less than a decade later, had garnered national and international attention. In 2006, she had a major solo show at The Power Plant in Toronto, ON and later that year received the annual Sobey Art Award. The following year saw Pootoogook’s work included in the Montreal Biennale and documenta 12 in Kassel, Germany. Her oeuvre includes a wide range of subject matter—from men's undergarments and spiritual self-portraits to domestic scenes and shopping at the local co-op.View Long Biography and Citations
