Artistic Community:

Rigolet, NL

Date of Birth:

Artists may have multiple birth years listed as a result of when and where they were born. For example, an artist born in the early twentieth century in a camp outside of a community centre may not know/have known their exact date of birth and identified different years.

Inez Shiwak is a seamstress, video artist and producer from Rigolet, NL who also works as a researcher and activist. Shiwak learned her skills as a seamstress from her mother, Jane Shiwak, who is one of few artists in Nunatsiavut who continues to make Inuit dolls. Shiwak first learned pattern making as a way of participating in intergenerational knowledge sharing, which is at the core of Inuit craft. She is known for her sealskin works.View Long Biography and Citations
