Lucy Abraham is an artist from Kuujjuaq, Nunavik, QC, who creates a variety of earrings, mitts and sealskin boots using her beading and sewing skills. Through her Instagram account, Lucy’s Handicrafts, Abraham sells her creations, which include many of her beaded sealskin earrings in a range of vibrant colours and shapes. Abraham also shares many of her sealskin mitts, which she says are one of her favourite things to make.

Abaham has been sewing mitts since she was 11 or 12 years old after learning the skill in her school’s culture class. She can now make a pair in one to two days. In 2018, Abraham started beading after being inspired by her sister who began beading at a young age. Looking for a new hobby to try out, Abraham decided to try her hand at beading and asked her sister to teach her. She was hooked right away and spent many nights with her sister learning beading techniques.

For Abraham, creating is not only a wonderful way to use her imagination, but also brings a sense of pride and joy, especially when she sees her family members wearing the mitts and parkas she makes. “It makes my heart happy knowing that they won’t be cold during the winter, especially their hands,” says Abraham. She also feels a great sense of pride seeing people wearing her beaded creations. “I love to see my creations on people’s ear lobes,” says Abraham. “I am so thrilled when they receive their package and I get to see their smiling faces. I smile from ear to ear.” When it comes to custom orders, Abraham values the importance of working with clients to create pieces that they love. “I’ll ask them what pattern they like and what their favourite colour is,” says Abraham. “I want them to be happy.”

Abraham loves creating new patterns and experimenting with her beadwork. “I am always brainstorming to come up with new things and new patterns,” she says. In the future, Abraham would like to broaden her skills by learning to crochet and knit.
