Date of Birth:

Artists may have multiple birth years listed as a result of when and where they were born. For example, an artist born in the early twentieth century in a camp outside of a community centre may not know/have known their exact date of birth and identified different years.

Date of Death:

Artists may have multiple dates of death listed as a result of when and where they passed away. Similar to date of birth, an artist may have passed away outside of a community centre or in another community resulting in different dates being recorded.

Napachie Pootoogook was a highly acclaimed artist from the Qikiqtaaluk region of Nunavut known for her signature drawings created with acrylic paints, black felt-tipped pens or pencil crayons. Pootoogook's artistic career in drawing and printmaking began during the late 1950s, at the encouragement of her mother, Pitseolak Ashoona. Pootoogook's early works focus on depictions of Inuit spirituality and stories while later pieces record Inuit traditional life, clothing and community history, particularly on the experiences of women. Her prints have been included in almost every Cape Dorset Annual Print Collection since the 1960s until her death in 2002. During her lifetime, Pootoogook created over five thousand works and was included in numerous solo shows and group exhibitions in Canada, the United States and Europe.View Long Biography and Citations
