Sobey Art Award Exhibition Opens at the National Gallery of Canada
On October 3, the 2025 Sobey Art Award exhibition opened to the public. The exhibition includes work by the six shortlisted artists from across the country. Multidisciplinary artist Tarralik Duffy is the shortlisted artist in the Circumpolar Category. “My favourite part about art is that I don’t have to think about that…I make the art, but the interpretation is not my job,” Duffy said during the Sobey Award press conference when asked what she hopes people take away from the exhibition. The winner of this year’s award will be announced in November, and the shortlist exhibition is on view until February 8, 2026. 


Zacharias Kunuk’s Film Wins Best Canadian Feature Film at TIFF
On September 16, acclaimed Inuk film director Zacharias Kunuk’s, OC, ON, film Uiksaringitara (Wrong Husband) (2025) premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and won Best Canadian Feature Film. Set 4,000 years ago, Uiksaringitara (Wrong Husband) is a supernatural historical drama that follows an arranged marriage between Sapa, played by Haiden Angutimarik, and Kaujak, played by Theresia Kappianaq. Kunuk is well known for his award-winning debut feature film Atanarjuat (The Fast Runner) (2001), which was the first Canadian feature film produced completely in Inuktitut and won the Caméra d'Or at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival. 


Suialaa Arts Festival Runs This Month

This year, the Suialaa Arts Festival (formerly known as Nuuk Nordic Culture Festival) runs from October 23 to 26 in Nuuk, Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland). The biennial festival celebrates a wide range of artistic practices, from dance and theatre, music, to literature and visual arts. The Nuuk Kunstmuseum (the Nuuk Art Museum) will host an exhibition of works by Kalaallit artists and Sámi artists, while other partner institutions like Katuaq, Nunatta Isiginnaartitsisarfia (the National Theatre of Greenland) and Nunatta Atuagaateqarfia (the Central Library of Greenland), will offer performances, readings, seminars and workshops. 


Canadian Arctic Producers Celebrates its 60th Anniversary
On September 26, Canadian Arctic Producers (CAP), the wholesale marketing arm of Arctic Co-ops Limited,  celebrated its 60th anniversary. Founded in 1965, CAP was developed with the goal of promoting, protecting and preserving the artistic traditions of Inuit and Dene communities. Today, the Inuit-owned organization plays a vital role in the Inuit art market by connecting the many isolated communities in the North to southern art markets and buyers, with proceeds returned to northern co-ops. 


Taaqtumi 2 Anthology of Arctic Horror Stories Published
Taaqtumi 2: An Anthology of Arctic Horror Stories was published on September 2, 2025. The anthology weaves contemporary Arctic settings with monsters and mysterious beings. Among the contributors are Aviaq Johnston, Rachel and Sean Qitsualik-Tinsley and Jamesie Fournier. The first volume, Taaqtumi, was published in 2019.
